What to Expect During an
In-Home Euthanasia Appointment

We understand that choosing euthanasia for a beloved pet is one of the most difficult decisions you'll ever make. Our goal is to provide a peaceful, compassionate experience where your pet can remain in the comfort of their home, surrounded by the people and love they know best.

Knowing what to expect can help ease some of the uncertainty. Every family is different, and every appointment is tailored to your wishes, but here's what a typical visit looks like.

A Gentle Goodbye

in the Comfort of Home

Step 1: Arrival & Connect
When we arrive, we will spend time with you and your pet. We'll answer any remaining questions, review the process, and make sure everyone, including other pets, have time to settle in.
There is never a rush. We move at the pace that feels right for you and your family.

Step 3: Gentle Sedation

Step 2: Choosing a Comfortable Place

Your pet can stay wherever they feel most comfortable.
Many families choose:
  • Their favorite bed
  • A cozy couch
  • A sunny spot in the yard
  • A favorite blanket
  • Your lap

Our goal is to create a peaceful environment that feels familiar and safe to them.
A sedative is administered intramuscularly and over the next 5 to 15 minutes, depending on your pet's health status, the sedative will gently help them relax. Sometimes additional time and sedatives may be needed.

During this time, your veterinarian will step out briefly to give your family a few private moments together. You are welcome to hold your pet, pet them, speak softly, share memories, or simply enjoy the quiet.

You may notice normal effects of the sedation, such as panting, blinking, tongue relaxation, small head movements, or mild twitching. These are expected and do not mean your pet is uncomfortable.

This step helps ensure your pet is calm, comfortable, and surrounded by love before moving on to the next stage.
Step 4: A Peaceful Goodbye
Your veterinarian will return to gently check on your pet and ensure they are relaxed. Some pets drift into a deep sleep, while others may gently come in and out of rest as the sedation takes effect.

A small IV catheter is placed to allow for an injectable anesthetic that will guide your pet into a deep peaceful sleep.

Once your pet is completely asleep, the final medication is administered through the IV catheter. The medication allows the heart to stop quietly and peacefully.

Your pet feels no pain or distress during this process, only comfort and deep rest.
Many families share that this moment feels very calm and peaceful, surrounded by love.
Step 5: Time Together
Your veterinarian will gently verify an absent heartbeat using a stethoscope confirming that they are at peace. They will offer you as much private time as you need.

Some families choose to whisper a few final words.
Some say a prayer or offer gratitude.
Some share memories, laughter, or tears.
And some simply sit in stillness, holding space for their companion.
There is no right or wrong way to say goodbye, only what feels right for you and your pet in that moment.
Step 6: Aftercare
We will carefully transport your pet with the dignity and respect they deserve to fullwill your wishes for them.

If you have chosen home burial, where permitted by local regulations, we'll answer any questions and help guide you through the next steps.
We will also explain when to expect ashes to be returned, if applicable.
